The Benue Trough of Nigeria hosts more than eleven barite fields Fig.1 that are being scavenged by small-scale and artisanal miners. Despite the earlier reports on the presence of these barite fields, e.g. Farrington, 1952, their field characteristics, grade, dimensions, and abundance are not known and documented well enough.
