The Mills cartridge belt was invented in i866 by Captain now Brigadier-Gen et al Anson Mills, of the U. S. Army. His purpose was to provide an acceptable substitute for the clumsy box then used for carrying fixed ammunition. He first made belts of canvas, forming loops by sewing additional strips to the body of the belt.

This Mills pattern shotgun belt is tan with 24 cartridge loops and has the brass buckle plate with a Remington Dog Head design. It has the Mills markings with the 1905 patent date. I have seen a number of these over the years and they are usually heavily used condition.

There is a bold Artillery unit marking on the inner strap. The brass adjusters are nicely marked with Mills bullet logo and the patent dates. Jul 01, 2021 I have this Mills pattern 1881 cartridge belt. It has the wide brass buckle and 45 cartridge loops which would indicate that it was meant to hold 4570 rounds. If Im not mistaken, the Mills belts used during the Spanish-American War had 50 cartridge loops for the 30-40 Krag. This belt doesnt seem to fit two consecutive rounds of 4570, even though it has 45 cartridge loops.
